Jeffrey Angles poetry talk

Exophony: the practice of expressing oneself in writing in a foreign language.  Jeffrey Angles surprised me in a lot of ways that I didn’t expect. From his Native American style clothing to his flamboyant, vibrant personality, he was a tremendous vehicle through which to hear his work. He shared topics— such as homosexuality, exophonous writing, and feminist works. To be honest, I was not sure what I expected to hear from his talk when I was preparing to come to the talk. After a week off from classes, I was happy that i was able to recognize a lot of phrases and vocabulary. I also have recognized that a lot of casual vernacular that I learned as a kid and while visiting Japan have shown up in the episode. For instance, “やだ” showed up repeatedly, which we never use in class, yet this word for no was used constantly throughout this last episode. I am going to try and watch more episodes because I feel like surrounding myself with more Japanese in my day to day life will make a big difference in my development.

This episode was great because it went into the background of Zoro and I was able to recognize a lot of Japanese, in terms of vocab and grammar structure. It was cool to see how Kuina influenced Zoro’s training and how they both pushed each other to become better. This episode was rich and deep with plot, so it was probably one of my favorite episodes in recent memory.
